Roxas' year of life before returning to Sora.
In Kingdom Hearts when Sora loses his heart, His Nobody Roxas was born. Xemnas finds him in the Dark Margin and recruits him as the thirteenth member of Organization XIII. Roxas has no memories of his past, but he can wield the Keyblade. The Organization sends him to different worlds to defeat Heartless and release their hearts, which are gathered into its artificial Kingdom Hearts, with the promise it will give them their own hearts.
Roxas is taught how to carry out missions by Axel, who becomes his first friend. Shortly afterward, a fourteenth member named Xion joins the Organization. She can also wield a Keyblade. Roxas and Xion begin working together while Axel is away at Castle Oblivion. When he returns, the three become close friends and spend their evenings eating sea salt ice cream on the Twilight Town clock tower.
Meanwhile, Naminé is restoring Sora's memories so that he can awaken after the events of Chain of Memories. However, some of those memories have found their way into Roxas and Xion. Roxas begins having dreams of Sora, while Xion's grows stronger as she absorbs more of his memories. The Organization avoids their questions about who they are and why they can use the Keyblade.
After meeting Riku and Naminé, Xion learns that she is a Replica, a puppet created to copy Sora's powers. Her appearance resembles Kairi because of Sora's memories of her. As Xion absorbs more memories, she begins taking on the appearances of those connected to Sora. Roxas and Axel see her look like Kairi, whereas Xigbar sees Ventus. She slowly starts drawing power away from Roxas. Sora cannot awaken while those memories remain with her, and the Organization intends for her to absorb Roxas and take his place.
Roxas eventually leaves the Organization to find answers for himself, as Xion decides to return to Sora. Axel tries to keep both of his friends from leaving for fear they will be destroyed. Axel and the Organization manages to bring Xion back and alters her.
She confronts Roxas in Twilight Town on the clocktower where they used to eat ice cream. She reveals that she has consumed most of Sora's memories and has taken on the form of Sora. She forces him to fight her so that her defeat will return the memories she has taken. Roxas defeats Xion. As she dies in Roxas' arms, she asks him to free Kingdom Hearts and says that He and Axel are her best friends. Everyone begins to forget that she existed. Roxas heads to the World That Never Was to confront Xemnas, now wielding two Keyblades.
In the end, Riku intercepts Roxas and attempts to capture him for DiZ. Unable to defeat him with his own strength, Riku accepts the darkness in his heart and takes on Ansem's appearance. He brings Roxas to DiZ, who places him in the simulated Twilight Town and changes his memories. Roxas awakens to the summer vacation seen at the start of Kingdom Hearts II.
