Final Fantasy Versus XIII
Cancelled Game KHIV is inspired by
Nomura's earlier cancelled Final Fantasy project provides striking visual parallels to Yozora and KHIV. Those echoes help explain interest in KHIV's direction, while the stories remain distinct.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII was an action RPG project directed by Tetsuya Nomura, originally planned for PlayStation 3. It centered on Prince Noctis and a modern-looking kingdom caught in a conflict over a crystal. Square Enix announced in 2013 that the project would become Final Fantasy XV using the assets but presenting an entirely different story. Versus XIII was never released as a separate finished game, so its trailers reveal a proposed story rather than a complete adventure. The game was originally going to mirror the gameplay of Kingdom Hearts and the story's central protagonist Noctis was to mirror sora (with Noctis meaning night sky, and sora meaning sky).
Kingdom Hearts III introduces the comparison through Verum Rex, a fictional video game advertised in Toy Box. Its hero, Yozora, fights in a modern city with companions and futuristic weapons. His appearance invites comparison with Noctis, especially the earlier Versus XIII incarnation. Within Kingdom Hearts, however, Verum Rex has its own identity. The cover of Verum Rex shows Yozora sitting on a throne, similar to how Noctis sits on his throne. The Nameless star, Which is implied to be the woman in the Verum Rex "trailer" bears a resemblance to Stella from this game.
The base game's secret movie, Yozora, takes that mystery beyond the Toy Box advertisement. Sora and Riku appear separately in a realistic city later identified as Quadratum, and Yozora watches Riku from a skyscraper. A hooded figure forms a heart shape around the moon. The urban setting and presentation strengthen the association with Versus XIII, especially in its depiction of the Tokyo Metropolitan Building which Noctis Castle was fashioned after, and with the music drawing audio cues from Somnus, the piece composed for Versus XIII by Kingdom Hearts and Versus XIII's composer Yoko Shimomura.
Re Mind's Secret Episode makes the visual parallel much more specific. After Sora meets and battles Yozora, the ending shows Yozora awakening in the back seat of a chauffeur-driven car. The staging and camera framing closely echo Noctis's car sequence in a 2011 Versus XIII trailer, a resemblance documented in side-by-side comparisons. This is the main source of the claim that Re Mind recreates a Versus XIII scene. We even see Luxord (or his real self) replacing the role of Cor asking the same question, "Impressive, is it not?" This is a direct reference and makes it clear that KHIV is a partial recreation of this cancelled game.
In the ending where Sora is defeated, Sora is crystalized in a manner very similar to the l'Cie in Final Fantasy XIII, which when a person branded by one of the Fal'Cie ("Gods") fulfills their purpose they are crystalized.
It cannot be stressed enough the lost potential and major dissapointment of this cancelled game. Nomura has been public about his dissapointment in leaving the project and the games cancellation. Fans have demanded the game be made for years. The subsequent Final Fantasy XV also left much to be desired at launch and was quite different than the game shown in Versus XIII trailers.
Nomura addressed the comparison in a 2020 Dengeki interview. He acknowledged the speculation about Yozora and Noctis, but explained that the worlds of Verum Rex and Versus are very different. In a 2022 Famitsu interview, he said that he had considered KHIV and Verum Rex as alternative next projects, and identified the Nameless Star as a central Verum Rex character. These comments establish a creative connection and an ongoing Kingdom Hearts mystery, without announcing a restoration of the abandoned Versus XIII story. From this we can conclude KHIV's story will differ but ideas and themes from Versus XIII will be tied in.
For KHIV, we have seen Airships and Soldiers in the same armour directly out of Versus XIII footage. It is also clear that Luxords real self is fullfilling the role of Cor, leader of the city guard.
