The Current Era
A seperated world under threat by Xehanorts plans
The era in which most of the series takes place.
In the Age of Fairytales, the world was destroyed and broken apart in a great Keyblade War. What was left were distinct individual worlds separated by a barrier. Each world grew in its own time, people were born there and it gained its own heart. For the most part worlds seldom interacted and its inhabitants stayed blissfully unaware of each other.
In this Era Keyblade wielders had mostly died out and the Keyblade in many worlds was mere legend. In Dark Road we see Master Odin have only two classes of wielders and unfortunately due to the event s of that game only 4 survived, Xehanort, Eraqus, Master Odin, and not explained how he connects, Yen Sid.
Due to the experiences of his youth and the loss of his friends Xehanort was sent down a "Dark Road" and decided that this world was imbalanced between Light and Darkness. He aimed to Summon Kingdom Hearts and start it over.
Most of the series takes place in this era and revolves around Xehanort's plot to restart the world by collecting 13 Vessels of Darkness and 7 Hearts/Guardians of Light to forge the χ-blade.
The worlds in this era are distinct and exist in various Realms. You can read about that in Realms. The barrier that separates them can be broken through various means, such as breaching their keyhole, using corridors of Light/Darkness, or a Gummi ship cross the Lanes between.
